  1. I am happy that Obama recognizes the importance.

It is sad that we haven't really gotten there yet when I learned about all of this almost 15 years ago from my reading on how most of grains used for farmed animals can feed the world. The animals, environment and people suffer as a result of ignorance and indifference.

I read something not too long ago, which makes perfect sense to me. Check this out:

  2. Anthony, thanks for posting. Meat is for the economically advantaged, and by eating meat we actually take away food that could feed thousands. Grain.

Katherine, good link, I liked the comparison chart!!!

Anyway, I have another beef - it's all that hoopla about blood type diets. I'm blood type O and I'm supposedly a 'hunter' that must live off meat. This theory is completely ridiculous and is debunked by many other physicians. You can be blood type O and be a vegan/vegetarian.

  3. I agree people need to eat more grains than meats to fight against global hunger. It is a simple concept.

When I heard it takes 60 pounds of grain to make one pound of meat in some years ago, I changed my food diet by including more grains, vegetables, and beans.

Katherine's link to the comparison between carnivores and herbivores makes sense. I agree that humans are more herbivore than carnivore. I found the comments under the comparison was interesting to read. Thank you very sharing it

Raychelle, interesting about the blood types and food situation. I think our American diet was based on capital gains, not based on our health. I think more individuals are recognizing that they need to listen to their own body, not what the advertisements tell them what to eat. I don't even know what my blood type is, but I do know I cannot eat too much dairy products.

  4. anthony, it's not just you. 99% of the world's population are lactose intolerant. the 1% represents people of India, who have evolved to include the enzyme needed to break down cow milk while the rest of us don't. don't ask me how they evolved while the rest of us didn't.

drinking milk, eating yogurt, cheese, ice cream... that's why we experience flatulence, gas, constipation, headaches, lethargy, because our stomaches aren't designed to break down cow's milk. and we shouldn't! cow's milk should be for their calves, their babies.

  5. For a long time, I kept drinking milk and eating cheese because I was told it was good for me. I did not learn about the alternative choices until I started working at a natural food store in Rochester. I learned to love oatmeal milk and hemp milk over soy and cow milk. I agree with Raychelle that milk should be for calves, not for humans.

About meats, when Katherine pointed the differences between carnivores and herbivores, I liked the part when it talks about the shape of intestines and cholesterol.

About intestines, a lot of customers have approached to me complaining about their Irritable Bowel Movements (IBS). Eating too much meats and cheeses causes IBS. If they stick with grains and beans and avoid meats and cheese like vegans, then they would less likely to develop IBS problems. I am not an expert but this is the correlational relationship I have been witnessing.

For cholesterol, many healthy people, not just those who are genetically at risk, start getting cholesterol problems as they get older because they are eating too much meats and cheese and they end up having premature heart diseases and attacks.

I am hoping the world, especially more restaurants, would gear toward to organic plant-based dishes much sooner than later.

  6. While on the subject of milk, there has been a debate about why people think it is ok to drink cow's milk but not human's milk. Calves are deprived of their mother's milk for the sake of human consumption.

Isn't it an oxymoron that Ben and Jerry's defense against using human milk, when questioned, is human milk is for their babies only. This shows absolute disregard for the cows' suffering. Humans are the only one that drink milk from another species.
