My pager broke recently (probably my 4th or so by now), and I've been struggling with disposing it in the trash. I would walk up to the trash and somehow my hand would refuse to just let it go. It's BROKEN! Who cares, right? Where else would it go than to the landfill? How many of our deaf friends have thrown their broken pagers in the trash? Probably all of 'em.

Great to know this! How abouttdonating to KDES pre school (or kindergarten) department. People in other states can follow suit with their deaf schools (or DHH programs) in their home states. Youngsters can play with them...I'm sure they have play/drama centers.

ReplyDeleteI did that with my first pager - donated to NMSD's preschool class. Boy, they loved it! Then I found out the batteries inside the pagers are very toxic, especially for children. I think SK3's are safer since their batteries are removable (don't forget to recycle those batteries!) then give them to older deaf children who are past the teething phase - as far as I know most pagers do not have removable batteries... mine is a SK1 so I'm mailing it off to be recycled :)

Every time my pager breaks and is not entirely replaceable, I tend to part it out and sell the replaceable parts on ebay. It's like parting out a vehicle that no longer runs and is too expensive to be repaired.
ReplyDeleteDonating broken pagers is the best thing to do, especially for anyone who don't know how to take them apart and to sell then piece by piece. For an LCD display part, for instance, is usually sold in between $20 to $40 on ebay.
While the functioning part works, you can sell it piece by piece on ebay. Otherwise, sell the entire broken pager for the lowest price on ebay or dispose of them eco-responsibly at no charge.

ReplyDeleteDontation to reycle I never thought of that. Why not anyone can give to whom who love the person who need to protection themselves. I have read several article about that. I also thought Recycle is best idea for recyle or e bay. Avoid gulity of waste or evironment can hurt, too.
